"My time as a learning assistant with GBYLS was one of great reward. Helping a child build confidence in their reading ability and being witness to the moment they get the feeling they can read is one of my greatest joys. Building relationships with my learners brings with it a great sense of purpose.  I am very proud of my association with this organization."

Learning Facilitator

We are looking for volunteer tutors and learning assistants*, helping young students learn basic literacy and numeracy skills.

(*Our tutors are professional, retired teachers, while our learning assistants are our trained volunteers who deliver individualized programs created by our Lead Tutor.)

How it Works

We support children and youth aged 6–18 who are struggling with basic literacy and numeracy skills. Each learner is matched with a screened and trained volunteer for weekly one-on-one sessions tailored to their individual needs. Support may include help with reading, writing, and basic math.

To get started, a parent or guardian completes a short application form. Our team then meets with the family and matches the learner with an appropriate volunteer. All services are free and confidential.

Why Tutor?

Helping a Student

Build Meaningful Relationships

The bond that forms between a tutor and student is a powerful and long-lasting one. The trust that can build in this relationship bolsters the student’s confidence and belief in themselves. The connections with the student families helps to positively engage the parents in their child’s learning journey. This builds stronger supports that can lead to the child’s success.

Help Build Community

As the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child.” By joining GBBGYLS, you will be part of the ‘village’ that is helping prepare our students to become cherished and valued members of our community. Plus, you will become part of our team of Tutors and Learning Assistants, who come together at least twice a year to continue their own growth through sharing of their experiences and best practices with others.

Let's here about Ella's experience as a Volunteer tutor with the YLS.

FAQ's

We’re flexible with your schedule. Most tutors spend around 1–2 hours per week with a student.

How long each week will I be tutoring?

Once you apply and complete the screening process, we’ll match you with a student based on your availability, experience, and comfort level. We aim to create a good fit for both the tutor and the student.

Will I be matched with a student?

Yes. We provide literacy resources and materials to support your sessions.

Are teaching materials provided?

All tutor sessions are performed in person either at our office or a public space like a school, library or a community center that is local to you.

Is the tutoring in person or virtual?

Yes. All volunteers complete an application process, which will include references and a police record check.

Is there a screening process?

Anyone can support students as either a learning assistant or a tutor. Learning facilitators work one-on-one with students and can come from any background with a strong understanding of literacy. Tutors must hold a Bachelor of Education and, in addition to one-on-one support, can assess students and create lesson plans.
